Inside Out:
The Capsule Collection

Inside out is a capsule collection, with its use of adjustable, detachable, and reversible parts to allow for the garments to be worn in a variety of ways and for a variety of occasions. Lockdown allowed me to reflect on the garments we choose to wear and purchase now as well as the emotions that surface in these times.

My love of 17th and 18th century undergarments comes from the ways in which they shape the outer garment, their versatile nature, and their hidden beauty. In a similar way in which we look at lingerie being worn as outerwear in today’s world, I wanted to explore 17th and 18th century undergarments as outerwear.

For this collection I wanted to transform undergarments that would have been worn for one purpose and only ever seen in private quarters, to be worn outdoors and with multiple purposes. I wanted to apply this in a way that the undergarments can be admired, more functional and sustainable for today’s world.

To continue the bedroom and sustainable theme I chose to use worn bed sheets and cotton broadcloth for my fabrics. The broadcloth will be hand printed with a marble effect to display the flux of emotions, both the highs and the lows which have been experienced during lockdown as well as allow for more colour choice in the garments. As the garments in this collection are reversible, one side will represent the lows through its blue shades and the other side will represent the highs with its pink like shades. The use of the multifunctional outfits and the reused bed linen allowed me to continue my efforts to make my collection environmentally and socially conscious for today’s world while still creating beautiful and Innovative pieces that people my age would love to wear.

The hand painting is inspired by marbling and the mix of emotions in which surface due to lockdown. This image and video are of the happy, bright side in which I wanted to display. I experienced happiness in the smallest things like playing with my dog and spending time with outside in the yard in the sun and the little laughs of silly things that happen with family.
